André François was born as André Farkas in Temesvár, Austria-Hungary. He studied arts in Budapest and settled in Paris in 1934. He started out working with the poster artist Adolphe Cassandre. He later worked as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer, but also became known as a cartoonist. He published his often subtle cartoons in French left wing papers like Le Nouvel Observateur, before finding an international audience through publications in Punch (UK) and The New Yorker (USA). He has also illustrated several books by authors like Jacques Prévert.

In France, André François was an influence on Sempé and Tomi Ungerer. He likewise inspired cartoonists in Australia (Michael Atchinson), Belgium (BenoîtGal (Gerard Alsteens)HugokéJoke and Jean-Louis Lejeune), India (Vins A.K.A. Vijay Narain Seth), The Netherlands (Jan van Haasteren), Spain (Sergio Aragonés), the United Kingdom (Quentin BlakeRoy Raymonde, Gerald Scarfe, Ronald Searle) and The United States (Jules FeifferEdward Sorel).
